One of the things I love about working with books is indulging myself with a long browse through library and bookstore collections. While on holiday over christmas I did just that and found this little gem. Many of you may already know it as it has been around for a little while, but for me Shh! We Have a Plan was a serendipitous revelation.
Shh! We Have a Plan is the beautifully illustrated story of four children walking through the forest hunting wildlife. Three of the children have a plan on how they are going to capture something, and the fourth child just wants to talk to the animals. The child is over-ruled by the bigger siblings, with rather funny and surprising consequences.
I loved the humour in this book, and the humour translates well to children. Even older children find the book funny, my son picked up my review copy and read it cover to cover giggling to himself. The illustrations are simple and beautiful, and it is a great book for reading out loud to a group, or to a child as a bedtime story. The words are easy to read and quite repetitive, so the book is also good for those early readers wanting to try reading alone. However what I really love about this book is it shows that no matter what other children say to you, even those who are bigger and stronger, if you stay true to yourself good things will happen. That this life lesson is wrapped up in a funny book that children will love having read to them is something really special.
