 Aaaarrggh, Spider by Lydia Monks

When you have your first child and you want to read to them it is often hard to choose from the enormous range of books available. So you really appreciate it when friends give you books they have loved reading to their children. In the case of Aaaarrgghh, Spider! we were given what became a family favourite and introduced to a new author we fell in love with.

In Aaaarrgghh, Spider Lydia introduces us to a spider who wants to be a family pet, and the spider does it’s best to be included as part of the family. When they finally accept the spider as a pet, well….. you’ll have to read it yourself to find out what happens. This is a very funny book with beautiful illustrations that children love, especially the sparkly spider webs. We read it so many times that when we moved to Australia we could often be heard saying ‘Aaaarrgghh, Spider! Out You Go!’, the books catch phrase. We were also lucky enough to be given a copy of a cd with Dawn French reading the book. This saved us on many a car journey!

We loved this book so much we searched for other Lydia Monk books when my son grew older, and added I Wish I Were a Dog to our list of family library favourites. I only mention this because as I was coming into my office to write this review I told my son what book I was reviewing and he told me I like I Wish I Were a Dog Better. First I knew! Then I thought about it. And I thought of the Lydia Monks books we borrowed from the library and the two books we own (obviously our two favourites) and realised that Lydia writes her books from a perspective children love, I mean a spider that wants to be a pet and a cat that wants to be a dog? She then illustrates them with beautiful bold pictures that capture children’s attention (she has even illustrated some Julia Donaldson books). With all this going for her it is easy for everyone to find their own favourite.
