When his eccentric great Aunt dies Leo is given a music box with a very strange set of rules. His cousin Mimi chooses a unusual pendant in memory of her Aunt. When they are together and the rules are broken the children find themselves in another world – Rondo.
This children’s book had all the makings of a story I could get lost in yet I managed to get nearly half-way through the book before I fully appreciated the genius of this book. On the surface this is an adventure story with two very different children trying to save a dog and end up saving a world. Along the way they come to develop a friendship as well as meeting an interesting array of characters who help or hinder them on their quest to retrieve Mimi’s dog from the Blue Queen. The journey is full of twists and turns and climaxes with a surprising twist.
What makes this book special is that Emily Rhodda takes Leo and Mimi into a magical land of fairy tales where they themselves are thought of as fairy tales. This twisting of the the two fairy tale worlds is what makes this book unique, and all the more interesting. When I was about half-way through I was not sure I would even review this book for the site, now I am finished I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I am sure patient children who get lost in fantasy worlds will find this Emily Rhodda trilogy a rewarding read!
