Escape with The Demi-Gods – Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan and Reawakened by Colleen Houck
When I was a child I used to love reading stories of the Greek, Egyptian and Roman Gods, nowadays children love reading stories about the god’s off-spring – the Demi-gods. This week I have two books in the denier to review.
Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief is a well known book for boys, but I wanted to find out if this book was as good for girls as it has been for boys.
The book starring Posiden’s son was a good read for girls, and I was pleasantly surprised. Annabeth, the main female character is spunky and independent, and I am sure girls will warm to her. Percy is new to the Demi-god life and quite endearing. The writing is fast paced and you quickly get sucked into the story of three teens trying to Find the Zeus’ lightening bolt and save the world and Percy’s mum.. I also really like Rick Riordan’s tounge-in-cheek style. Ten plus readers of both sexes will like this series based on the Greek gods.
Reawaken has a mortal female lead who encounters a Demi-god on a mission, and by a quirk of fate has to help him save the world from mortal peril as they try to stop Seth from taking over. Once again Lily is a strong likeable character and Amon is a Demi-god of epic proportions. The story is based on the Egyptian gods and is a little more complex and slower paced. There is a healthy dose of romance. The book is really more suited to teen and young adult girls.
I enjoyed both books and my little trip down Demi-god lane, and I am sure modern women will love the strong female characters in both books.
